As Head of Data Science & Product Analytics, you will be responsible for leading and growing our team of Data Scientists and Product Analysts and directing the continuous improvement of our internal analytics products. You will be responsible for all aspects of the data science program, from the software utilized, to the recruiting of world class talent and the implementation and operation of Duolingo’s data insights systems. You will work cross functionally across not only the product organization but with data engineering as well as product teams to inform data driven decision making. You will ensure that product teams, business functions, and executives have the data, insights, and recommendations they need to make high-stakes decisions.   • Set the vision, road map, and priorities for product analytics and data science at Duolingo
  • Build the team, systems, and practices that enables Duolingo to leverage cutting edge data mining
  • Build a sophisticated product analytics function that can tackle the next stage of challenges facing Duolingo
  • Define team org design and interfaces with the rest of the company, partner with business leads to support the analytics needs of different teams
  • Act as manager and individual contributor to develop new analytical frameworks, techniques and reporting that deliver user insights, guide product decisions and measure ongoing performance
  • Problem-solve with product and business teams, advise executive team how to leverage data science across the company
  • Help guide the development of our internal analytics products
  • Ensure the quality of our tracking and data
  • Help preserve our culture of fact-based decision making as we scale


  • You have 4 years of experience in product analytics, creating analysis, including dashboards, models, ad hoc analysis and data-oriented presentations in data science and analytics at a tech company (ideally consumer)
  • You have 2 years managing product analytics teams, with bonus points if you have built them from scratch
  • You have exceptional business intuition and conceptual thinking, with the ability to readily map business processes to the appropriate metrics and suggest hypothesis-driven analysis that efficiently deliver insights 
  • MBA and undergraduate degree in a quantitative field (e.g.: statistics, economics, computer science, ML/AI)
  • Experience articulating business questions, and using available data to find answers that translate into business recommendations
  • Demonstrated self-direction, with a desire both to learn new techniques and teach others
  • Expert-level skills in tools (e.g.: R, Python, SQL), statistical methods, “big data” technologies (e.g.: Redshift, Spark, Hive, BigQuery), and applied experience with machine learning on large datasets
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to relocate to New York City, NY
  • Ability to travel to Duolingo's Pittsburgh, PA headquarters every quarter


  • PhD degree in a quantitative field, as listed above
  • Gaming industry experience (e.g., balancing in-app economies for mobile games, improving subscription conversion and/or churn rates
