About the Podcaster mission
Spotify is a global community of over 250 million music fans and artists, and now podcasters. It’s always been our mission to make audio more accessible, and create a new and wonderful way for creators and fans to connect with each other.
The Podcaster Mission is the team within Spotify responsible for building tools for podcast creators. We have two platforms that help us do that: Anchor (the biggest podcasting platform in the world, which allows you to create, distribute, monetize, and grow a podcast, all for free) and Spotify for Podcasters (the platform that makes it easy to understand and engage with your listeners on Spotify).
We’ve done a lot already, and we have no plans of slowing down. Come help us build the future of podcasting!
About this role
We’re looking for an experienced Design Manager to join Spotify’s Podcaster Mission. You will be responsible for managing, and growing, a team of designers and UX writers focused on building and maintaining our suite of podcaster tools. This position reports directly to the Director of R&D for the Podcaster Mission, collaborates closely with our engineering and product leads, and is based in Spotify’s NYC office. (We’re all remote right now, but if/when we go back to the office, you’d be expected to be able to work in person with our NYC-based team.)

What you'll do

  • Be the senior design leader for the Podcaster Mission, directly managing our growing team of designers and UX writers (you’ll start with 5 direct reports) and helping them develop a strong and effective design culture
  • Establish a set of user-centric best practices for our design team, which helps them make (and get buy-in on) informed decisions while enabling them to continue executing on our roadmap efficiently
  • Drive high-level platform initiatives forward from a design perspective, collaborating closely with the leads of many other teams across our team and the wider Spotify organization including product, engineering, marketing, and insights
  • Take responsibility for every last detail, every step of the way, including how the work your team performs contributes to our overarching and holistic user experience and quarterly goals
  • Act as liaison between our design team and our Mission’s leadership team to develop a design roadmap for future features and improvements, ensuring design is always working on the most impactful initiatives
  • Actively oversee all phases of design development for key projects, from ideation to engineering execution and post-launch success tracking and iteration
  • Ensure that our design team stays plugged into and is able to effectively collaborate with the wider Spotify design community

Who you are

  • You have a sense of humor (a good one!)
  • You’re passionate about podcasting, both as it exists today and all of its potential over the coming years
  • You understand creators; you don’t have to have an explicit background in audio creation, but you should either have experience making your own content or a previous role that enabled you to strongly empathize with the creator mindset
  • You have 8+ years of design experience and 2+ years of experience directly managing designers; you’re committed to the management track and mentoring/growing others is your greatest passion
  • You’re a fan of the art of “radical candor”, and are very comfortable both giving and receiving direct feedback
  • You are an exceptional communicator who can explain and provide context to both subjective and objective requirements and constraints, and confidently make decisions when at a crossroads about how to proceed
  • You’re incredibly organized and are able to balance many theoretical, upcoming, and active projects, jumping into each one as it needs your attention
  • You believe that “anything is possible” and react to both challenges and new ideas with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a flexible, problem-solving mindset
  • You have experience implementing strategic, large-scale initiatives and understand how to weigh the pros and cons of different solutions and prioritize them relative to other product, technical, and business needs, and feel comfortable pushing back on asks that are not high priority relative to other things
  • You have experience scaling design processes and systems for a large (ideally global) consumer platform, as well as for a growing team
  • You aren’t scared away by (but rather are excited by!) complicated UX issues or new behaviors which have never been tackled by others before
  • Ideally, you have experience working in both a fast-paced startup environment and a larger company, so you can help us continue to move quickly while collaborating effectively with the rest of Spotify
You are welcome at Spotify for who you are, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or what’s playing in your headphones. Our platform is for everyone, and so is our workplace. The more voices we have represented and amplified in our business, the more we will all thrive, contribute, and be forward-thinking! So bring us your personal experience, your perspectives, and your background. It’s in our differences that we will find the power to keep revolutionizing the way the world listens.
Spotify transformed music listening forever when we launched in 2008. Our mission is to unlock the potential of human creativity by giving a million creative artists the opportunity to live off their art and billions of fans the chance to enjoy and be passionate about these creators. Everything we do is driven by our love for music and podcasting. Today, we are the world’s most popular audio streaming subscription service with a community of more than 320 million users.
