To help create an Alexa the world will love even more, we are adding a Principal User Researcher to our team. This is an extraordinary opportunity to define personalization for AI in the home.

The person hired for this position will own the user research for understanding how customers use Alexa today and how their interactions with her may become more personal in the future. The ideal candidate will thrive on the challenge of informing intuitive customer experiences while balancing complex and competing priorities. In this role you will work closely with design, product management, and engineering for the Alexa Identity team as well as with partner teams across Alexa.

As the Principal UX Researcher, you will define and execute on our most strategic user research programs, spanning a broad set of experiences and modalities. Research activities will predominantly be generative work (study design, field work, analysis), with some evaluative work (usability studies and concept evaluation). Strong knowledge of all phases of the product and design development cycle is critical for this position.

This position requires the ability to work independently and network proactively. You must be comfortable working on multiple products and applications in parallel. Strong organizational skills with the capability to multi-task are critical. Amazon is a fast-paced and exciting environment. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity and will be able to thrive in a resource constrained environment.


Additional responsibilities include:

· Work closely with cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize research questions based on analysis of current knowledge, project goals and risks
· Identify the best method or mix of methods based on research questions, timeline and resourcing
· Design experiments that distill project goals and research questions into well thought-out research plans that provide qualitative insight and quantitative measure
· Perform data analysis to create insightful and actionable findings presentations, both verbal and written
· Evaluate new and emerging methods and technologies and identify if and how to incorporate them into your team’s toolkit
· Help guide other researchers to prioritize work and requests; manage projects with in-house teams and external vendors

Basic Qualifications


· 10+ years of proven success leading user research projects with demonstrated impact
· A BS or equivalent degree in psychology, cognitive science, Human Factors, HCI, HCD etc.
· End-to-end experience with all aspects of research
· A strong portfolio demonstrating past work experience and deliverables
· Experience conducting research on multimodal platforms
· Hands-on experience with: lab-based user testing, remote testing, iterative prototype testing, concept testing, ethnographic research, longitudinal research (e.g. diary studies), benchmarking, international research, survey design and usage of multiple methods within a study
· Exceptional behavioral data-collection and analysis skills, (e.g., designing, conducting, and analyzing all kinds of user data.)
· The ability to manage ambiguity, work autonomously and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
· Ability to meet ambitious deadlines and deliver high-quality work on schedule, including quickly turning around study plans and reports
· Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and analytical skills; the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization
· Eagerness to continually learn, grow and improve the craft of research.
· Demonstrated passion for solving problems
· Strong grasp of quantitative data analysis
· Humor, creativity, and positive energy to maintain personal and team momentum

Preferred Qualifications

· MS in Human Factors, HCDE, or Cognitive Psychology
· Voice or multi-modal research experience in a global context
· International research experience
