Xero is a beautiful, easy-to-use platform that helps small businesses and their accounting and bookkeeping advisors grow and thrive.
At Xero, our purpose is to make life better for people in small business, their advisors, and communities around the world. This purpose sits at the centre of everything we do. We support our people to do the best work of their lives so that they can help small businesses succeed through better tools, information and connections. Because when they succeed they make a difference, and when millions of small businesses are making a difference, the world is a more beautiful place.
How you’ll make an impactAs Product Manager, you will be part of a new team who will be responsible for MTD ITSA in the UK product and, as HMRC mandates MTD filing for more taxpayers, this team will eventually have to solve MTD Corporate Tax and beyond.
You’re someone who is extremely delivery focused and can coach others in this. As the team grows you will hire product owners to streamline delivery for multiple pods whilst ensuring cohesive stakeholder engagement and product vision/strategy across all of the product teams they support… all of which should be something you have deep experience in, as this is a senior role in a complex product and regulatory space. This role will require you solve lots of hard problems around usability, commercialisation and regulatory requirements.
Eventually you will hire and manage other roles to scale the team to 2-4 pods, play a critical role in mentoring/guiding their teams and engaging with stakeholders across Xero.

What you’ll do

  • Ensure Xero’s customers have the best solution imaginable to ensure compliance with MTD Income Tax regulations in the UK
  • Understanding customer problems, you will be the champion of the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ and deliver value through defining, driving and executing a product roadmap that realises Xero’s vision and objectives and ensures the success of the product.
  • Bridge technical and business worlds as you lead strong and productive relationships with global business stakeholders to understand and deliver on market needs and priorities, and evangelise the product vision.
  • Work with strategy, product marketing, data and research teams and drive user and competitive research to uncover customer needs and new product value propositions in line with Xero’s vision.
  • Work closely with your peers in the product group leadership team: architects, product designers and agile facilitators to deliver quality software that solves real customer problems.
  • Cultivate a fun, rewarding, innovative and results-driven culture that lives and breathes our Xero values.

Success looks like

  • Xero’s customers have the most trusted and beautiful solution in the world to ensure they comply with HMRC MTD income tax regulations in the UK
  • You have a clear understanding of Xero’s strategic priorities and how your portfolio of products and services align to it. You have articulated a compelling product vision that your team of Product Owners pursue with missionary zeal. They know what’s important, how they are contributing, and why what they’re doing matters.
  • You have coached your direct reports in modern product discovery practices — enabling them and their engineering pods to understand and use many experimental techniques. You continually improve on and champion modern product discovery practices inside and outside of your team.
  • You and your direct reports actively seek out metrics to validate a hypothesis and measure results. Your portfolio is thriving because you and your Product Owners make good investments based on evidence.
  • You, your direct reports and their engineering pods obsess over customers: You all engage directly with them and get product ideas from observing customer struggles, and analyzing customer data.
  • You have built healthy relationships with your stakeholders. All stakeholders are updated appropriately on product vision, strategy, releases and roadmaps. Key partnerships are established as necessary to enable the success of products and services within your portfolio.
  • The boundaries of your portfolio (what your direct reports own and what they don’t) are articulated and understood inside and outside of the portfolio.
  • You have a compelling portfolio of products and services that your customers love to use.
  • Your direct reports are effectively supported. Their performance is reviewed regularly and feedback is continually provided in a timely manner. Good performance is recognised and celebrated. Poor performance is managed promptly. There is opportunity for them to grow at Xero. They understand their personal career path and are encouraged to excel towards it.
  • Your direct reports and their engineering pods are empowered to make decisions when fast, decentralised decision-making is appropriate to reduce delays, make improvements, enable faster feedback and more innovative solutions.
